What are we looking for in a student?

We are looking for students who are curious, creative, and eager to learn. You should have a strong interest in data visualization and design, be excited about working with and understanding people, and have a willingness to explore new ideas and approaches. Experience with programming, design tools, or research methods is a plus, but not required.

How do I get Involved?


Current UVA Students:

If you are an Undergraduate, Masters, or PhD student currently enrolled at the University of Virginia, reach out to Dr. Bako via email with [current student] in the header. Include your research interests and the specific research project you are interested in working on and why you would be a good fit for the lab.



Prospective PhD Students:

If you are interested in joining our lab as a PhD student, first apply directly to the School of Data Science graduate program. Admissions are open for Fall 2026 (deadline: January 5th, 2026).

When you apply, be sure to mention Dr. Bako in your personal statement, with a clear explanation of why and how she can be of help to your research and your future career. After you have applied, please send Dr. Bako an email with [prospective PhD student] in the header and include your CV, research interests, and a summary of your research interests. Please note that final admission decisions are made by the School of Data Science admissions committee.
