What are we looking for in a student?

We are looking for students who are curious, creative, and eager to learn. You should have a strong interest in data visualization and design, be excited about working with and understanding people, and have a willingness to explore new ideas and approaches. Experience with programming, design tools, or research methods is a plus, but not required.

How do I get Involved?


Current UVA Undergraduate and Masters Students:

If you are an Undergraduate or Masters student currently enrolled at the University of Virginia, please fill out this form and we will reach out to you as more positions become available.



Current UVA PhD Students:

If you are a PhD student currently enrolled at the University of Virginia, reach out to Dr. Bako via email with [current student] in the header. Include your research interests and the specific research project you are interested in working on and why you would be a good fit for the lab.



Prospective PhD Students:

If you are interested in joining our lab as a PhD student, first apply directly to the School of Data Science graduate program. Admissions are open for Fall 2026 (deadline: January 5th, 2026).

When you apply, be sure to mention Dr. Bako in your personal statement, with a clear explanation of why and how she can be of help to your research and your future career. After you have applied, please send Dr. Bako an email with [prospective PhD student] in the header and include your CV, research interests, and a summary of your research interests. Please note that final admission decisions are made by the School of Data Science admissions committee.
